High strength and light weight: Steel has high strength and elastic modulus, with a low density to yield strength ratio. Under the same stress conditions, the component has a small cross-section and light weight, making it easy to transport and install. It is suitable for structures with large spans, high heights, and heavy loads.

Good toughness and plasticity: The internal structure of steel is uniform, almost isotropic and homogeneous, with good toughness and plasticity, able to withstand impact and dynamic loads, good seismic performance, and actual working performance in accordance with calculation theory. The structural reliability is high.

High degree of mechanization in manufacturing and installation: Components are easy to manufacture in factories and assemble on construction sites, with high precision and production efficiency of finished products, fast assembly speed and short construction period on construction sites, making it the most industrialized structure.

Good sealing performance: The welded structure can achieve complete sealing and can be used to make high-pressure vessels, large oil tanks, pressure pipelines, etc. with good air tightness and water tightness.

Low carbon, environmentally friendly, and reusable: Building demolition produces almost no construction waste, and steel can be recycled and reused.

Heat resistant but not fire-resistant: When the temperature is below 150 ℃, the properties of the steel change very little; When the temperature is between 300 ℃ and 400 ℃, the strength and elastic modulus of steel decrease significantly. At around 600 ℃, the strength of steel tends to zero. In buildings with special fire protection requirements, refractory materials are needed for protection.

Poor corrosion resistance: In humid and corrosive media environments, it is easy to rust. Generally, rust removal, galvanizing or coating are required, and regular maintenance is needed. Special measures such as "zinc block anode protection" need to be taken for offshore platform structures to prevent corrosion.
